This is a great post from my buddy Austin, and of course I’ve been thinking about these matters a lot lately, or I wouldn’t be here at micro.blog. In an ideal world we’d all own our own turf, either individually or in collectives, with the web itself as the social network — but instead what many of us are trying to do is make our work available to people who remain on the standard Big Platforms while not ourselves becoming wholly-owned-and-operated subsidiaries of those Big Platforms. It’s difficult.
