Perhaps the single most vital discipline for me as a writer is to ask myself, paragraph after paragraph and page after page: What might this look like to someone who does not see the world as I do? It’s exhausting to keep on asking that, and I don’t do it as consistently as I want, but I keep trying because so many of the books that have most frustrated me are ones in which the author clearly has never considered that question.
