I think I’ve said something like this before, but in case I didn’t: I disable the word-count feature in text editors and word processors when I’m working on a book. Sometimes you make progress by separating the wheat from the chaff and burning the chaff, and when you do that you can end up with fewer words at the end of the day than you had at the beginning. But you’re still getting closer to your goal, if your goal is to write the best book you can. Word-counting distracts you from that truth.
