It’s interesting to read @dancohen’s post “In Praise of Email” in conjunction with @manton’s post on the web as the social network. Twitter, Facebook, et al. are platforms built on, and also parasitic on, the more extensive and far superior platform called the World Wide Web. But email, while it can be present on the web, is built on and takes full advantage of the amazing technologies that lie beneath the web, the ones that we collectively call the internet. What makes email great, or at least potentially great, as Dan suggests, is its ability to mobilize many of the most powerful resources of the internet itself.
