No journalist or columnist inspires the kind of hatred in my Twitter timeline that David Brooks inspires. And nothing in my whole experience with social media puzzles me as much as this puzzles me. It’s like a restaurant-goer who nurtures a smoldering hatred for Subway. I have often asked what it is about Brooks that drives people so nuts, but no one has ever answered me. Today’s column about Ta-Nehisi Coates’s new book is sending people into paroxysms of rage, and I honestly don’t see why. Brooks is if anything excessively deferential to Coates. What do people want from him? — other than for him to quit his job and leave the country? (Maybe nothing other that that.)
